The Helideck Foam Skid project is a critical component of a specialized firefighting system designed for offshore platforms, where safety standards are extremely stringent. The system is engineered to protect the helideck area—a high-risk zone for fire and explosion due to the presence of aviation fuel (jet fuel).

In this project, Innovative Steel Solutions Co., Ltd. (ISS) was responsible for fabricating the structural steel frame, support systems, and piping, as well as performing the complete mechanical assembly of the entire package based on client-provided technical drawings.

Helideck Foam Skid configuration & technical specifications

The Helideck Foam Skid is an integrated mechanical–piping–instrumentation package designed on a skid-mounted base, incorporating a complete system of structural steel, pressure vessels, foam tanks, gas cylinder racks, piping networks, and all necessary interfaces in accordance with General Arrangement (GA) drawings. The system is fully assembled and ready for offshore installation and operation.

It is engineered to meet stringent safety standards, including fire and explosion protection, ATEX certification, and Zone 2 classification. The design also provides comprehensive specifications for weight, lifting points, and structural connections, facilitating fabrication, transportation, and installation processes.

The equipment scope is clearly defined, featuring an 8,000-liter water tank, a 260-liter foam tank, and high-pressure nitrogen cylinders. The structure is fabricated using materials such as A36 or S275JR carbon steel and SS316 or SS316L stainless steel, ensuring suitability for offshore environments with enhanced durability, corrosion resistance, and ease of operation and maintenance.

The scope was executed with a fully integrated approach, from material selection and fabrication processes to technical control, ensuring accuracy, structural integrity, and long-term operational reliability under offshore conditions.

The implementation process included:

  • Precision cutting and forming using advanced mechanical equipment, ensuring tolerances in accordance with drawings.
  • Assembly and fit-up of components prior to welding to maintain geometric accuracy.
  • Welding performed in accordance with approved Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), with strict control of technical parameters and minimization of distortion.
  • Final fabrication, surface treatment, and preparation for coating application.

In parallel, ISS placed strong emphasis on controlling deformation and dimensional tolerances during assembly, ensuring seamless integration between mechanical modules and client-supplied equipment.

Upon completion of fabrication, all structural surfaces were treated באמצעות abrasive blasting to SA 2.5 standard, effectively removing contaminants and providing optimal surface adhesion for the coating system. The final painting system was applied in accordance with project specifications, ensuring excellent corrosion resistance and extending the service life of the product in harsh offshore environments.

Inspection and quality assurance in structural steel & piping fabrication

Quality is controlled throughout the entire fabrication process through a management system compliant with ISO 9001:2015, ensuring comprehensive oversight from material receipt and fabrication to assembly and final product completion. For welding activities, ISS applies ISO 3834-2 standards to ensure weld quality and structural integrity under actual operating conditions.

All welders involved are qualified through certifications such as the Welder Qualification Test Certificate and Welder Performance Qualification issued by DNV, ensuring their capability to perform high-specification welding works across various welding methods.

In particular, for critical components, ISS implements Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods to ensure product integrity and safety. The applied inspection methods include:

  • Penetrant Testing (PT): 100% applied to all piping welds to detect surface defects such as cracks and porosity.
  • Radiographic Testing (RT): Random inspection of 10% of welds to evaluate internal quality.
  • Magnetic Testing (MT): Applied to padeye welds to ensure safety under load conditions.

All inspection activities are carried out by reputable independent third-party organizations, including DNV and the Vietnam Register, ensuring objectivity, transparency, and full compliance with current technical standards in the mechanical, oil & gas, and industrial sectors.
